Let's all pretend for a second that we don't have to keep up with our neighbors. I mean if they buy a new car, we don't have to buy one as well. In fact, let us just say "nice purchase, Bob" and go about our day as if nothing happened. Because, you know, nothing did happen. Your life hasn't changed a bit. Your neighbor has made a purchase, and they should be able to enjoy that purchase without you buying something almost exactly like it.
It's important to be different. It's important to be unique. Some people do not have this need. They wish to be exactly like everyone around them. I strive to be the opposite. I don't want to buy something just because my neighbor has it.
"Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky. Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same."
I love that song and hate it at the same time. It is the theme song of the show "Weeds", though it is an old folk song. It's really full of meaning and can be transposed to many situations.
